Para eso el inglés usa el past perfect: «When I arrived at the station, the train had already left».
- Usar before, after, by the time, already y when
1. Forma
sujeto + had + participio
| Forma completa | Contracción | |
|---|---|---|
| Afirmativa | She had left. | She’d left. |
| Negativa | She had not left. | She hadn’t left. |
| Pregunta | Had she left? – Yes, she had. / No, she hadn’t. | — |
- Acción anterior (empezar) → past perfect: had started.
- Acción posterior (llegar) → past simple: arrived.
When we arrived at the cinema, the film had already started.
- by the time (para cuando): By the time the firefighters arrived, the fire had destroyed the barn.
- before / after: After she had finished her homework, she went out.
- already / never / just entre had y participio: I had never seen snow before that trip.
3. Los tres tiempos de la narración
| Tiempo | Función en el relato | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| Past simple | acciones principales, una tras otra | I opened the door and saw a dog. |
| Past continuous | escenario, acción en curso | It was raining and people were running. |
| Past perfect | lo que había pasado antes | Someone had left the window open. |
Un relato breve
It was getting dark and the wind was blowing. When Ana got home, she realised that she had lost her keys. She had left them at the library.
Recuerda
- ’d + participio = had; ’d + infinitivo = would.
- Relato: past continuous (escenario), past simple (acciones), past perfect (antes).
