- Elegir el pronombre relativo adecuado: who, which, that, whose, where, when, whom
- Distinguir relativas especificativas y explicativas y puntuarlas bien
1. Los pronombres relativos
| Pronombre | Se refiere a | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| who | personas | The woman who lives next door is a pilot. |
| which | cosas y animales | The book which I bought is great. |
| that | personas o cosas (solo especificativas) | The film that we saw was boring. |
| whose | posesión (cuyo) | That’s the boy whose bike was stolen. |
| where | lugares | This is the town where I grew up. |
| when | momentos | I remember the day when we met. |
| whom | persona objeto (formal) | The man whom you met is my uncle. |
2. Defining y non-defining
| Defining (especificativa) | Non-defining (explicativa) | |
|---|---|---|
| Ejemplo | The students who passed got a certificate. | My brother, who lives in Leeds, is a nurse. |
He passed all his exams, which surprised everyone.»
3. Omisión del pronombre y preposiciones
Paso a paso: ¿se puede omitir?
- «The book that I bought» → el pronombre es objeto (I bought it) → se puede omitir: The book I bought.
- «The woman who called you» → el pronombre es sujeto (she called) → no se puede omitir.
- Registro informal: preposición al final: «The flat (which) I live in is small.»
- Registro formal: preposición delante de which / whom: «The flat in which I live is small.» «The person to whom I spoke…»
- Tras preposición nunca se usa that ni who: «in which», «with whom».
Recuerda
- who (personas), which (cosas), that (ambos, solo especificativas), whose (posesión), where (lugar), when (tiempo).
