Las oraciones de relativo te permiten definir o identificar algo sin repetir palabras: en lugar de «I have a friend. My friend lives in Cádiz», dices «I have a friend who lives in Cádiz». En español casi siempre usamos «que»; en inglés el pronombre cambia según se refiera a una persona, una cosa, un lugar o una posesión.
Objetivos
- Elegir el pronombre relativo adecuado (who, which, that, where, when, whose)
- Unir dos frases con una oración de relativo
- Saber cuándo se puede omitir el pronombre
- Escribir definiciones en inglés
1. Los pronombres relativos
| Pronombre | Se refiere a | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| who | personas | The girl who sits next to me is Irish. |
| which | cosas y animales | The film which we saw was scary. |
| that | personas o cosas (más informal) | The bus that goes to the centre is the 7. |
| where | lugares | This is the café where we met. |
| when | momentos | I remember the day when I got my dog. |
| whose | posesión (cuyo) | That’s the boy whose sister is a pilot. |
2. Unir dos frases
Paso a paso
«That’s the museum. We visited it last year.»
- ¿A qué se refiere? a un lugar o cosa (the museum).
- it es el objeto de visited → lo sustituye which o that, y desaparece it.
That’s the museum which / that we visited last year.
Con whose
«I know a girl. Her mother is a famous chef.»
- her = posesión → whose.
- whose va seguido directamente del sustantivo (mother).
I know a girl whose mother is a famous chef.
3. Con comas: información extra
A veces la oración de relativo solo añade un dato extra, entre comas: «My uncle, who lives in Lugo, is a farmer».
- The book (that) I borrowed is great. → se puede omitir (después viene I).
- The book that is on the table is mine. → no se puede omitir (that es el sujeto de is).
Recuerda
- who: personas · which: cosas · that: personas o cosas.
- where: lugares · when: momentos · whose: posesión.
- El relativo sustituye al sujeto u objeto: no se repite he / it.
- Se puede omitir who / which / that si después viene otro sujeto.
