The four-day week
(1) A growing number of companies are experimenting with a four-day working week. The idea is simple: employees work four days instead of five, but they keep the same salary. Supporters argue that rested workers are more productive, make fewer mistakes and take fewer days off sick. In some trials, managers have reported that the amount of work completed hardly changed, while staff said they felt less stressed.
(2) However, the model is not suitable for every sector. Hospitals, schools and shops need to stay open, so they would have to hire more staff to cover the extra day, which would increase their costs. Critics also warn that squeezing five days of work into four could make each working day longer and more exhausting.
(3) For young people entering the job market, the debate matters. Many of them say they value free time as much as a high salary. Whether the four-day week becomes the norm will probably depend on how well companies can adapt without losing customers.
