The real price of cheap clothes
(1) Buying a T-shirt has never been cheaper. Many high-street brands now release new collections every few weeks, encouraging shoppers to buy more and wear each item fewer times. This model, known as fast fashion, has made clothes affordable for millions of people.
(2) Yet the low price on the label hides other costs. Producing textiles requires huge amounts of water and energy, and many garments end up in landfills after only a few uses. In addition, the workers who sew the clothes are sometimes paid very little and work long hours in poor conditions.
(3) Some consumers are reacting. Second-hand shops and clothes-swapping events are becoming popular among teenagers, who see them as a way to express their style without damaging the planet. Whether these habits will spread widely enough to change the industry remains to be seen.
