Pour imaginer une situation irréelle ou peu probable, l’anglais utilise if + prétérit, puis would + base verbale : If I had a lot of money, I would travel around the world. Le prétérit n’exprime pas ici le passé, mais l’irréel.
Objectifs
- Construire une hypothèse avec if + prétérit, would + base verbale
- Utiliser If I were you pour donner un conseil
- Distinguer condition réelle (if + présent) et hypothèse (if + prétérit)
- Exprimer un souhait avec I wish + prétérit
1. La construction
If + prétérit, would (’d) + base verbale
- Négation : wouldn’t (would not) → If it didn’t rain, we wouldn’t stay inside.
- could (pourrait) et might (pourrait peut-être) peuvent remplacer would : If I had time, I could help you.
- Comme pour if + présent, jamais de would juste après if : If I would have ✗ → If I had ✓.
2. If I were you
Avec be, on emploie souvent were à toutes les personnes dans une hypothèse, surtout à l’écrit : If I were rich… If she were here… L’expression If I were you, I would… (« À ta place, je… ») sert à donner un conseil.
Conseil
- — I’m always tired.
- — If I were you, I’d go to bed earlier.
3. Réel ou irréel ?
| Condition réelle (possible) | Hypothèse (irréelle, peu probable) | |
|---|---|---|
| Forme | If + présent, will + base | If + prétérit, would + base |
| Exemple | If I pass my exam, I will celebrate. | If I won the lottery, I would buy a house. |
| Sens | Cela peut vraiment arriver. | On imagine, on rêve. |
À retenir
- If + prétérit, would + base verbale : hypothèse irréelle.
- If I were you, I would… : conseil.
- Jamais de would juste après if.
- I wish + prétérit : souhait, regret sur le présent.
