- Former la structure modal + have + participe passé
- Exprimer la déduction et l’hypothèse sur le passé (must have, may / might / could have, can’t have)
- Exprimer le reproche et le regret (should have, ought to have, could have)
- Distinguer could have (possibilité non réalisée) et was able to (réussite)
1. La construction
modal + have + participe passé
2. Déduire et supposer
| Forme | Degré de certitude | Exemple |
|---|---|---|
| must have + PP | quasi-certitude (ils ont dû…) | The migrants must have been exhausted after the crossing. |
| may / might / could have + PP | possibilité (ils ont peut-être…) | Some of them might have lost their papers. |
| can’t / couldn’t have + PP | impossibilité logique (ils n’ont pas pu…) | They can’t have imagined what was waiting for them. |
Exemple culturel
Between 1892 and 1954, millions of immigrants passed through Ellis Island, in New York Harbor. Standing in the long queues of the inspection hall, many of them must have felt anxious: they could have been sent back if they had been judged too ill.
3. Reprocher et regretter
| Forme | Sens | Exemple |
|---|---|---|
| should have / ought to have + PP | reproche, regret : il aurait fallu | The government should have apologised earlier. |
| shouldn’t have + PP | reproche : il n’aurait pas fallu | They shouldn’t have destroyed the old docks. |
| could have + PP | possibilité non réalisée : aurait pu | The town could have turned the factory into a museum. |
| needn’t have + PP | action faite mais inutile | You needn’t have booked: the museum was free. |
4. Could have ou was able to ?
- could have + PP : c’était possible, mais cela ne s’est pas fait : He could have stayed, but he left.
- was / were able to + BV : capacité réalisée à un moment précis : After months of searching, they were able to find their relatives’ names in the archives.
À retenir
- Modal + have + participe passé = jugement présent sur un fait passé.
- must have : quasi-certitude ; might / may / could have : possibilité ; can’t have : impossibilité.
- should have : reproche, regret ; could have : possibilité non réalisée.
- Écrire should have, jamais *should of*.
